Job Description

Impact a multimillion-dollar transformative initiative, IBD Plexus, designed to accelerate to better diagnostics, treatments and, ultimately, cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

This position provides the flexibility of being based at the Foundation’s New York City headquarters or functioning as a remote, work from home position. Some travel is required for internal meetings, conferences, etc.

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is on a mission to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of people with these diseases, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The Foundation recognizes every patient journey with IBD is unique and is leveraging technology and data integration to advance the science toward precision medicine in IBD. The Foundation has built IBD Plexus – a state-of-the-art data exchange platform – which allows researchers to dramatically accelerate research.

IBD Plexus is a research platform that leverages various sources of data, including patient-reported, clinical case report forms, and electronic health records, and linked biosamples, collected through diverse research studies conducted at sites around the country. Job Description

The Foundation is looking for a Manager, Business & Research Operations who will play an integral role in the success of IBD Plexus. The manager will divide their time between business operations activities and research operations activities and work with cross-functional teams from within and outside of the Foundation, and IBD Plexus vendors to maximize the value of IBD Plexus to its stakeholders. The manager will possess strong interpersonal skills, be team oriented, and thrive in a fast-paced and complex environment. In addition, s/he will have demonstrated ability to work in a very fluid environment managing shifting priorities and demands.

This position reports to the Senior Director, IBD Plexus and will interact with the Foundation’s senior leadership team and external scientific advisors.

Business Operations

IBD Plexus is a rapidly growing program where the manager will help promote a culture of continuous process improvement and will take on critical projects and process improvement initiatives that will contribute to many facets of the program and directly impact business and financial results such as development of vendor communication and risk mitigation plans to promote successful project execution. In addition, s/he will help with development of analytical tools to support strategic decision making. The manager will also work with the Finance team to support management of financials for the program and resolve billing queries.

Research Operations

A critical success factor of IBD Plexus is optimizing the use of biosamples (blood, intestinal tissue and stool) across the researcher community by turning finite biosamples into a reusable asset through converting biosamples to data. The manager will oversee all administrative and operations activities associated with the IBD Plexus biobank and central reference labs, including overseeing vendors to ensure optimal biosample and data quality. The manager will also work with the study cohort teams to optimize biosample collection and shipment processes. In addition, s/he will ensure all vendor issues are identified, investigated, and resolved appropriately. The manager will also be responsible for working with the IBD Plexus Data Science team to manage academic and industry projects leveraging the use of Plexus resources, including contracting, data and biosample dissemination. S/he will also manage the IBD Plexus Project Selection Committee.


The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical, scientific (e.g., molecular biology), or quantitative field
  • 3-5 years project and program management experience or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience working in healthcare/life sciences field, preferably experience sourcing to contract research organization (CRO) or working for a CRO
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and managing multiple projects
  • Analytical with the desire to develop standard operating procedures, identify process improvements and measure the effectiveness of processes
  • Excellent problem identification, analysis, and solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter, very organized, detail oriented, has a passion for excellence and delivering value and has a “get stuff done” mentality
  • Proven customer service skills

Preferred skill set:

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with bioscience basic/translational research, drug discovery and development process
  • Experience with academic-led translational studies that collect biosamples
  • Business transformation and change management awareness
  • Understanding of patient data protection and privacy compliance
